This manga is a basic archetype of the shonen manga... it does have some things better than most manga of it's type, but it does fall into predictable slumps.
The story varies in terms of either being very good, okay, or just palm to the face worthy. Some villains are very interesting, from the arc of the Village of the Mist, to the Akatsuki... it all has interesting characters. The main characters aren't the best... you can really see the basic archetypes behind them. The goofy hero, the fangirl, and the cold rival. Some people can say that their backstories are the main interesting part of them, but it isn't enough to exactly excuse their bland natures. Even though I said the villains are amazing, they still fall into a bad area... some are never very fleshed out, others die in anticlimatic fashions...
One point in the story in particular did annoy me... I won't try to spoil too much, but the battle against Pain of the Akatsuki had some interesting moments, but one Deus Ex Machina action just simply ruined the story. It isn't as bad as "it's just a dream", but it could have fell into that line.
The great war was something that I did like... aside from how it seemed a little amazing that the five great villages could so easily patch things up and be friends towards a common enemy. Naruto's overpowered nature does irk me... how he single-handedly either turns the enemy on his side, or instantly beat them. Some are drawn out, others simply end quickly with a sudden surprise attack.
Ultimately, I can say this... it is something that a shonen manga fan would probably be able to get into. It won't really break any ground, it won't flip the whole shonen theme on the top of it's head. It is a good manga, and you might enjoy some of the villains... Otherwise, it's something that can be overlooked if you're not interested in this genre.
